Introducing Outerthere!
This is not actually Outerthere's first trip. But the archives are starting off here because this was the first video to come out of an Outerthere trip. Shout out to Outerthere fam Chad Heird who filmed and edited this video.
"There are some good things to be said about walking. Not many, but some. Walking takes longer, for example, than any other known form of locomotion except crawling. Thus it stretches time and prolongs life. Life is already too short to waste on speed. I have a friend who's always in a hurry; he never gets anywhere. Walking makes the world much bigger and thus more interesting." - Edward Abbey
We did the Sabego Lake Easy Hike starting at Sloatsburgh and ending Tuxedo. It was a hike in soaking summer thunderstorm.
Here's the original trip invite:
Hi guys,
OK, so I know I said I wanted to make the next trip a "Bring Your Parents Hiking" trip, but so many of you just wanted a regular trip, I decided to take this trip off the calendar for now. That said, our next trip will be an Easy hike to Sebago Lake between Sloatsburg and Tuxedo in Harriman State Park on Saturday, May 11th. (Harriman is 46,000 acres... so we won't ever get tired of going here.)
Before I started guiding trips, I'd taken several friends on this trail I put together (including my 65-year old mom!) and everyone's loved it because it traverses a stream, which is fed by a damned lake we'll pass (it's damn-release season to alleviate ice melt runoff, and that means awesome, shallow whitewater stream!) and altitude gains are gradual, so you can leave your climbing gear at home. Although we'll be walking approximately 7 miles between two villages, we should be arriving at Tuxedo in time to catch the 6:30 train back home. Here's the map: http://goo.gl/maps/W2cdg.
Sebago Lake, like most of the other bodies of water in this area, is not swimmable, but it is fishable (in case you want to catch your lunch). Once we cross this point, we've got the entire trail practically to ourselves until Tuxedo; and you'll appreciate it, because after a lake-side snooze, you'll have to fight the -itis hard to get to the end and you don't want anyone else seeing that.
We'll be meeting at the entrance to NJ Transit in Penn Station in NY at 8:45a for a 9:14a departure. Purchase your round-trip ticket to Tuxedo via Secaucus Junction. Tickets are apprx $25 from the tellers or 50-cents cheaper from vending machines (according to Chris P.) We should be back at Penn Station by 8p. Here's my handy-dandy checklist for what food and gear to bring. On this trip, you'll definitely need your ankle support and/or trekking poles if your ankles suck as bad as mine.
Hurry up and reserve your spot! Only 10 available for this favorite trip. Feel free to share invite, bring friends, family, or pets.
